British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
